S-Video is comprised of two channels – “Y” for Luminance – the black and white image; and “C” for Chrominance – the colour information. The four pins in an S-Video plug/socket are for the positives and respective negatives of these two components.
S-Video is a big step up from Composite Video because it keeps these vital elements separate (hence the name). Information can be smeared in Composite Video as these components are merged into one cable, causing some interference which results in a reduction of sharpness and also colour bleeding. S-Video on the other hand keeps the image sharp and clear.
