Simple yet elegant

The build quality of this amp is superb, under the hood is all high quality caps and components. The DAC board is very substantial and it's one of the first DACs on an integrated amplifier that performs as well as my Cambridge Audio CXN streamer. Its has a high sample rate and does native DSD. It also handled audio from a music DVD via the optical input. The phono stage was also excellent, records played quiet and clear. It has all the inputs and outputs you can think of and the APTX bluetooth is really good, whilst BT isn't really an audiophile function it's convenient to have and a bonus when is sounds great. The sound in general? well it's clear, crisp and refined. Ultra high detail with a high gloss presentation. The Rotel's strength is definitely its polished top end although is does over power the lower mid a touch, theres is a trade off for all that sparkle and it's the bass line, groove and energy. This is more apparent in less aggressive music, a more energetic source like The Darkeness - One way ticket to **** had me stuck to the couch for almost the whole album. The guitars and vocals simply roared and the bass and drums had punch and power. There is 200watts of grunt in this beast and it can really deliver some slam with the right music, dropping the treble back 1 notch helps when things get a bit bright. I plugged in my notoriously hard to drive Wharfedale Jades and it brought these to life, similar (although not quite as good) to the Anthem STR. Another highlight was how simple the amp is to use. There is a button on the remote and faceplate for every input, disabling the tone controls, adjusting bass, you name it. Although is does make the remote bit of a girthy brick. Just a slimmer profile would have been nice. Compared to my reference Emotiva pre power separates??? Well sound wise it beats it in top end shine and clarity and has a bit more vibrancy to it. The rest is a close draw. Function wise it has more inputs, outputs, high quality built in bluetooth and a much better DAC. The amplifiers menu and functions are quicker and easier to operate. You do get slightly better sound and an easier to use amp for your money. Highly recommend.
